Shunde Bank Tower: The project is located in Shunde District which has become one of the most affluent counties in China. The project is part of a grand civic master plan that includes the administrative government building, the Shunde Library and the Shunde Performance Center. It is sited on an important parcel within the master plan directly adjacent to the green axis park and designated to have one of the two towers that form the gateway of the master-plan. The proposed 230m tall tower is placed directly opposite the Poly Business Tower, symmetrical along the axis, reinforcing the intent of the master-plan design. Along Xing Ye Road an inviting and grand civic space is created due to the design’s simple horizontal podium volumes and generous proportions of the plaza space that allows permeability between the Western and Eastern public spaces.
This plaza extends around the corner along Jin Gui Road forming an L-shaped public frontage addressing the vibrant Xing Ye Road to the south and the Green axis to the east. The tower addresses Jin Gui Road and the Green Axis in a formal manner, allowing the tower volume to engage directly with the ground plane therefore creating a strong presence at street level and when viewed from the green axis. The placement of the taller Data Centre buildings to the north of the site helps to prevent overshadowing within the project site. By placing these buildings away from the active edges of the site, access to vault facilities is more controlled and more secure. The design concept reflects Shunde Rural Commercial Bank’s philosophy of collaborative strength, valuing the power of working together towards greatness, reflecting the company’s core values in the design of its headquarter building. The three strokes from the character ‘川 ’ refer to a dynamic fluid approach that is driven by energy, vibrancy and harmony. The number ‘3’ is featured in our design proposal significantly.
The tower and the podium are each composed of three volumes and there are three feature spaces in the landscape design. The core philosophy of openness is reflected in the podium and landscape design by the dissolving boundaries. The tower is composed of three interlocking and ascending volumes. The three volumes gain strength by interlocking together allowing the collective to reach greater heights and goals together. The form is designed to appear stable and yet give an impression of growth and progress. The top of the tower and the facade design is articulated to increase the tower’s perceived height. The feature angled panels on the facade create cascading patterns bringing dynamism and a notion of abundance. The idea is representative of the symbolism of a mountain that creates and catches water and then stores it at its heart. The heart of the building is represented by the public atrium of the banking hall volume. The public atrium is a dramatic space between the tower and the podium which enhances the connection between the two.
The 99m length of the podium volume facing the south is made possible by keeping the podium height less than 24m. This horizontality helps to create an inviting civic space while maintaining an appropriate sense of human scale at street level. The landscape strategy of this project aims to bring the greenery from the green axis on the east and the green buffer on the west into the site and upwards onto the podium terraces and the tower roofs, further extending the surrounding green and the green philosophy of the master-plan. Furthermore the greenery continues upwards into the sky garden spaces in the tower and onto the tower roof. The L-shaped plaza is defined by a distinctive linear aesthetic that unifies the two street edges. The direction of the landscape elements draws people in toward the building and the floor treatment is extended into the interior spaces thereby creating a seamless flow of landscape and space. The proposal, fulfilling the brief and offering new interpretations, was warmly received with a second prize in the design competition.
