The new office tower in Taiyuan is located in a prominent position on the east-west axis of the central Chinese metropolis.
The design of the 200 metre high tower makes optimum use of the site and is based on a traditional geometric volume, which starts from an octagonal footprint and transforms dynamically to assume a generally rectangular appearance. This results in clearly accentuated entrances so that the lower storeys of the building look out on to the city and its corner position allows ease of access from all sides.
The chamfered corners of the entrance areas are fully glazed while the profiling of the remaining facade surfaces in terms of their lines and density of elements follows from the logic of the building geometry and so describes a gentle transformation from solid to open surfaces. This criss-cross pattern finally opens to reach its maximum proportion of glass in the upper storeys and allows a high level of natural light into each floor while drawing the eye to the sculptural qualities of this building.
